Moratti on the league
Monday’s game between AC Milan and Napoli means Inter now sit in second place in the league, but Nerazzurri president Massimo Moratti doesn’t believe it will all come down to the Milan derby: “I don’t think it will be decisive,” he said, shortly before entering the new CONI headquarters being inaugurated today, “but it’s all a lot of fun. It’s starting to get interesting now.”
I think Moratti is wrong here the Milan derby is going to be a crucial match for Inters chances of overtaking AC, though in reality all the other matches are just as important, we just need to win all our remaining games and the rest is down to Milan slipping up a couple of times.
Moratti was then asked whether Napoli’s chances had been reduced following their San Siro defeat, to which he replied: “Mazzarri’s team are not out of it. Yesterday they had a poor game but Napoli are still a very good side and they have done extremely well until now.” As the end-of-season run-in begins, “let’s hope we can eat away at their lead. We’ll do our best but we don’t have an easy fixture list. Who do I want to win out of Juventus and AC Milan on Saturday? I haven’t thought about it yet.”
Napoli definitely aren’t out of the running yet but at least now we have the advantage over them. As for the Juve v Milan match that’s a tough one as I never like to see Juve win any match but if they win on Saturday it would be better for Inter than if Milan won, though as Juve are out of the running I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost on purpose just to spite Inter!
As he left the new CONI headquarters, Moratti was again asked about last night’s game: “As is often the case, the biggest, most important games aren’t always the most enjoyable ones because of the pressure and the caution adopted, but in the second half it was different.” The Inter president then reiterated that “the championship race will run to the end if Napoli and ourselves are able to pick up a few points.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming big match between Juventus and AC Milan, Moratti said “I think Juve really want to make up for recent results.” Finally, a word about the Inter players: “I’m extremely proud of my players and I hope I will be proud at the end of the year too.”
No matter how the season ends up the Inter players can hold their heads high and be proud of the comeback they’ve achieved since Leonardo took over.
